About It Takes Two
What we do
It Takes Two is a greeting card publisher. We make greeting cards, note cards, bookmarks and two-year pocket planners, and we sell them by the pack to card and gift shops, veterinary clinics, churches, hospice and care teams, real estate offices and anyone who would rather send a real card.
The line is deepest in the cards that are hardest to find: sympathy, the loss of a pet, encouragement and faith. Every product page shows the front and inside wording in full, because for these cards the words matter as much as the picture.
Since 1984
It Takes Two began in 1984 as a mother-and-daughter company in Minnesota. Georgia Rettmer made the art, from torn paper she made and dyed herself, and her daughter Kimberly Rinehart wrote the verses. Their first line was 24 greeting cards, shown at the Atlanta gift show in September of that year.
The name stands for the two of them, and for the two people every card brings together: the one who sends it and the one who receives it.
The company was run from Georgia’s home in Mankato for its first two years, then from Le Sueur, Minnesota, for decades. Today It Takes Two is in Jacksonville, Florida.
The artists
Every card starts as original art by a real artist, and each design credits who painted it. The cards are made in the USA.
It Takes Two began with one artist and has added others since, each with a style of their own. Among the artists in the catalog today:
- Georgia Rettmer: torn-paper art, from paper she makes and dyes herself. No scissors.
- Nancy Phelps: soft watercolors. With It Takes Two since 1995.
- Claudia Rovens: mixed-media drawings. She joined in 1990 as a sales representative in Wisconsin, then became one of the artists.
- Cary Heath: cut paper in many textures, layered for depth.
- Lucy Rigg: finely detailed designs for everyday and seasonal cards.
- Katie George: watercolors of the countryside. She began painting in 2002.
- Kim Conway: watercolor and paper collage.
The catalog also carries the work of Wendy Bentley, Robbin Rawlings, Sandy Lynam Clough, Jacki Frerichs, Beth Nadler, Darlene Flood, Helen Lyness, Sarah Miranda, Michelle Gilsey and Mary Clare Schweitzer.
